This acrylic on canvas painting references three photos I took in April 2010 on Lake Awoonga at the edge of Castle Tower National Park, QLD. As a keen wildlife photographer I took photos across the lake throughout the day, from early misty morning until late afternoon. In this painting I wanted to unite images of the distant ranges and the Whistling Kites in an afternoon light, showing both the inner and outer feathers and featuring the solitary remnant trees that hold the nesting chicks. The Kite's familiar descending whistle and striking white markings on the under wing make them easy to identify - keep your eye out for your local Whistling Kite.
